Marble Ghisai, Grinding and Polishing: What Is the Difference?
The three words are often used as if they mean the same thing. They describe different stages of the work, and knowing which one your floor needs is the best way to judge any quote, including ours. Ghisai is also called marble ki ghisai, sangmarmar ghisai or simply floor ghisai, and on granite, Kota stone and mosaic or terrazzo floors the same machine work is usually known as patthar ghisai; we work on all of these stones.
Marble ghisai
Ghisai, literally "rubbing", is the everyday name for machine grinding and polishing of a marble floor. A rotary machine fitted with abrasive stones or diamond pads works the floor with water, starting coarse and finishing fine. When people ask for ghisai they usually mean the whole job, not only a final buff.
Marble grinding
Grinding is the cutting stage. Coarse diamond abrasives remove a very thin layer of the surface, taking scratches, worn paths and old patchy polish with it, and bringing slightly raised slab edges level. It makes deep restoration possible, and it is only needed when the floor's condition calls for it.
Marble polishing
Polishing works on a surface that is already flat and sound. Progressively finer abrasives build the gloss back, and where the stone suits it, crystallisation or a sealer adds protection. A floor that has simply lost its shine may need polishing alone.
Does Your Floor Need Grinding?
Signs a floor may need grinding first
- Scratches that catch your fingernail
- Raised edges between slabs, or joints you can feel underfoot
- Dull walkways at doors, in front of sofas and in the kitchen
- Etch marks from lemon, vinegar or harsh cleaners that polishing has not removed
- A cloudy, yellowed or patchy top layer left by old polish jobs or coatings
When polishing alone may be enough
- The floor is level and the joints are flush
- The shine has faded but scratches are light and on the surface
- The floor was properly restored before and needs maintenance, not a reset
These are signs, not a diagnosis. Stone type, hardness and current condition decide the treatment, which is why every floor is inspected before a technique is chosen. Grinding is recommended only where the floor needs it. Some stains sit inside the stone rather than on it, and if a mark will not come out we say so before work starts. Depending on the stone and its condition, the job can also include stain removal, scratch removal, crack and hole filling, and edge polishing; how far a stain, scratch or crack can be improved is confirmed at the inspection.
Delhi's mix of older independent houses and modern apartments means marble and tile surfaces vary widely in age and condition — from decades-old flooring that has never been professionally restored to newer installations needing routine deep cleaning. We inspect each floor on-site before recommending a treatment plan.
